A walk- Celebration of Youth!

Heart Beats of SPCE: Part 10

A Walk-Celebration of Youth!

In the vibrant year of 1982, after the grand success of our Cultural Program, SPACE 82, we decided to throw a grand party. Perhaps this would be our last get together as SPCE students. There after, we would be busy into term work submissions and main examinations.

Hotel Delhi Darbar at Grant Road, famous for its mouthwatering non vegetarian dishes, especially the white chicken, was chosen for the party.

Our group, featuring Nandu Ingale, Anup Sharma, Hemant Naiknavare, Raju Bhagia, Suresh Mahajan, Rajan Bunage, Pramod Sant, Deshpande, Nitin Gadkari, others, and myself, embarked on the journey from our hostel in Andheri to Grant Road. Reaching the restaurant on time, we threw ourselves into the extravagance of the party…a feast of laughter, stories, and flavours that danced on our palates!

As the clock struck midnight, we made an unconventional decision. The decision that would turn this night into an unforgettable adventure! Instead of heading straight back in taxis, we resolved to walk all the way to our hostel, embracing Mumbai's quiet nocturnal charm.

Our journey began. Girgaon Chowpatty, our first stop, welcomed us with its calm waves and the cool, salty breeze of the Arabian Sea. The moonlight shimmered on the water as we paused to soak in the serenity, with laughter and light-hearted jokes echoing across the quiet shore.

As we walked onward, the iconic Mahalaxmi Temple came into view. Bathed in moonlight, its spiritual aura seemed to bless our adventure, imbuing us with newfound energy.

Nearby, Haji Ali, standing boldly amidst the rippling waters of the Arabian Sea, left us speechless. Its white dome glowed softly under the night sky, surrounded by the gentle hum of waves.

The heart of the city was calling as we made our way past Dadar TT Circle. The crossroads  were wide open and peaceful that night, with just a few vehicles breaking the silence.

The view of Mahim Church, with its graceful silhouette, lent a moment of peaceful reflection before our journey resumed.

Bandra's seaside road proved rejuvenating, as the Arabian Sea reappeared to accompany us. The iconic Sea Rock Hotel, standing tall against the shimmering waters greeted us. The sea breeze carried laughter and songs, pushing us forward with renewed vigour.

As the night stretched on, Vile Parle and Andheri marked the final stretch. We were approaching to the end of our epic trek.

And then, as dawn broke, we finally reached our hostel at SPCE. The sky, tinged with hues of orange and gold, greeted us warmly. The rising sun painted the campus in soft light, as if welcoming us back from our night of exploration. Birds began their morning songs, and the cool morning breeze carried with it a sense of calm and renewal. For a moment, time seemed to pause; the world waking up while we wrapped up our extraordinary journey!

Mumbai at night had wrapped us in its magic!

That wasn't just a walk!

That was a celebration of friendship!

That was a celebration of youth!

Every step walked that night is remembered!

Dear ones,

Are you ready for breath-holding Part 9 of Heart Beats of SPCE?

Warning: Students are advised not to attempt such hilarious adventure rather misadventure.

The Great Prank of 1980!

Heart Beats of SPCE: Part 9

The Great Prank of 1980!

As a young student, I found immense joy in the magic of classical songs from Hindi cinema. One of my favourite songs was:

‘April Phool Banaya

To Unko Gussa Aaya…’.

This beautiful, romantic song from the 1964 movie, ‘April Fool’ was filmed on the lovely duo Vishvajit and Saira Banu, and sung by legendary Mohammed Rafi in his magical voice. Its lively tune and playfull lyrics, perfectly captured the mischief and fun of the occasion, April Fool. During my diploma days, I often drew inspiration from the light hearted vibe of this song and played pranks on my class fellows.

But in 1980, I decided to do something extraordinary on the eve of April Fool occasion. My roommate Rajan Bunge was having Rampuri Knife with him, in his suitcase. I decided to use it as a central object in my prank.

On that unforgettable night, just at midnight, I put my plan into action. Secretly, I took Rajan's knife from his suitcase, making sure no one noticed. Armed with a bottle of red ink that I had cleverly procured earlier, I slipped into the toilet block. Under the dim lights, I spread the red ink generously across the floor, creating what looked like a pool of blood. I placed the Rampuri knife near my "body," switched off the lights, and lay down on the floor, pretending to be the victim of a gruesome murder.

I had only myself and my breath for company as I waited in complete darkness. Minutes ticked by, and finally, I heard someone enter the toilet block. Later, I learned he was Bava, final year Mechanical student. In the eerie silence, I felt his footsteps getting closer. He was murmuring a song, unaware of the chilling scene ahead. Suddenly, he stumbled upon the knife and noticed the "blood" and the motionless body.

I could feel his panic even before he tried to shout-but he couldn't! Frozen in fear, he quickly ran away out of the toilet block, letting out a blood-curdling cry:

"Murder! Murder!!" His desperate scream pierced the night, waking up the entire wing.

Within moments, students from all corners of the hostel gathered outside the toilet block, torches in hand, whispering in confusion. Some were still half-asleep, while others, who were working on their termwork submission, were wide awake. A few courageous students ventured inside. As their torchlight fell on me, lying lifeless on the floor, the whispers turned into gasps.

"That's Ingale from Diploma!" one of them exclaimed, recognizing me from my clothes and build. The scene escalated quickly-rumors and speculations flew through the crowd.

Some remembered my adventurous antics during Holi, while others debated if I had enemies within the hostel or outside. My roommates, Rajan Bunge and Suresh Mahajan, were bombarded with questions, though they had no idea what was going on.

…And Rector, Prof. Bhavani Prasad arrived at the scene. There was a pin drop silence! Bava briefed him. Grasping the situation, he instructed Shri Balkrishna, the hostel clerk, to inform the D.N. Nagar police station in Andheri. As these words hit my ears, a surge of panic coursed through me. Things had gone farther than I had planned.

Just as Balkrishna running to make the call, I decided it was time to end the drama.

Springing up from the floor, I walked to the door and shouted at the top of my lungs, “April Fool!  Enjoy!!”

For a moment, there was dead silence!

And then, chaos erupted again-but this time, it was shock and disbelief.

Students screamed and ran in all directions, their faces a mix of relief and anger. To prove my point, I am well, I went back inside, retrieved the empty red ink bottle from under the wash basin, and showed it to them.

Slowly, the truth dawned on everyone. It was all just an elaborate prank- April Fool!

Prof. Bhavani Prasad, however, was far from amused. His face turned red with fury, but he managed to stay silent for a while. Then, in a calm yet stern voice, he said, "Mr. Ingale, see me tomorrow in my chamber!" With that, he walked away, leaving the crowd to disperse.

Life as a Hostel General Secretary!

Heart Beats of SPCE: Part 8

Life as a Hostel General Secretary!

Being elected as the Hostel General Secretary was both an honor and a responsibility that came with high expectations.

Our hostel was a vibrant hub of cultural exchange and camaraderie. It also accommodated students from African countries, Mauritius and other such countries who shared their unique perspectives, enriching our experiences. Alongside them were students from prestigious institutions like the J.J. School of Art and Printing Technology. Faculty members, including Prof. Bhavani Prasad (Rector) and Prof. R.M. Joshi (Warden), were part of our community, along with professors like Prof. Natu, Prof. Pannikar, and Prof. Desai from the SP Jain Management Institute. Even though it was predominantly a boys' hostel, two girls resided in separate accommodation, making the hostel even more dynamic. Office staff such as Mr. Balkrishna, Mr. Natarajan, Mr. Desai, Mr. Pandu, and Mr. Palekar, along with the watchmen and other supporting staff, further added to the sense of togetherness.

A dedicated hostel committee worked with me to ensure smooth operations. Cultural secretaries Sanjay Deo and Vikram Suchadeva organized memorable events like Ganapati Festival, Holi celebrations and others, while mess secretaries Suresh Mahajan and Pramod Morankar strived to improve the quality of food in the mess run by contractor Bachchubhai. Pramod Sant, the magazine secretary, chronicled hostel life, and gymkhana secretaries Kaushik Mehta and Ramaswami ensured a vibrant recreational environment. Our committee meetings became a platform to address issues such as repairs and maintenance, trespassers, and inclusivity of day scholars and students from Bhavan's hostel.

Life in the hostel was lively and full of activities. However, one day, an unpleasant incident occurred that tested my guts.

A foreign student, Snehwardhan (name changed), the son of a police chief, had a quarrel with his Indian roommate. The altercation escalated when Snehwardhan physically assaulted and verbally abused his roommate in front of others. As soon as I was informed, I went to the room with friends to investigate the matter. Snehwardhan was not present, so l instructed the others to notify me upon his return and advised the victimized student to move to another room temporarily for his safety.

News of the incident spread quickly among the hostel residents, sparking outrage. Some students, in their anger, entered Snehwardhan's room and threw his belongings, including his mattress, outside. The next evening, Rector Prof. Bhavani Prasad summoned us to his residence. Normally calm and considerate, Prof. Prasad was visibly tense as he addressed the situation.

"Mr. Ingale," he began sternly, "do you realize the seriousness of this incident? I want the names of the students responsible for throwing out Snehwardhan's belongings. Strict action will be taken against them."

I was taken aback by his tone. There was an unbearable silence in the room as we absorbed the weight of his words. Finally, I mustered the courage to speak.

"Sir, may I request you to share the full details of what has happened? There seems to be more to this situation," I said cautiously.

Prof. Prasad sighed, his usual composure giving way to visible tension. "Snehwardhan has informed his country's embassy through a close aide," he revealed. "He's planning to escalate the matter. If he reaches the embassy, all of us will be in serious trouble."

I listened calmly and then replied, "If this is the case, Sir, allow me to take the matter to the Deputy Prime Minister of India, Mr. Y.B. Chavan."

Prof. Prasad looked at me in surprise. "You know the Deputy Prime Minister? How will you reach him?"

I explained, "Sir, my father has close acquaintances with former Chief Minister Sharad Pawar, who has ties to Mr. Chavan. Through them, I can escalate this matter if needed. But for now, I suggest we call Snehwardhan and ask him to leave the hostel immediately. The victimized student and we all will submit a written complaint against him. If he refuses, we can take the matter to the college authorities and further".

Prof. Prasad considered my suggestion and finally nodded. "All right. Let's call Snehwardhan and inform him of the consequences."

Snehwardhan was summoned and made aware of the gravity of the situation.

Understanding that the hostel community and authorities were united against his actions, he agreed to leave. The next day, he returned with a taxi, packed his belongings, and quietly left the hostel.

The incident, though challenging, taught me valuable lessons about conflict resolution, diplomacy, and standing up for what is right!

My Experience with Film Shootings in Film City, Goregaon

Heart Beats of SPCE: Part 7

Experiences with Film Shootings !

During my stay at SPCE Hostel, I had a remarkable opportunity to witness the magical world of filmmaking up close. One day, news spread among us hostelers that few students who had flair of acting were required for acting in the movie Zamane Ko Dikhana Hai.  The connection came through Danny Denzongpa's niece, who was also staying at our hostel. Filled with excitement, four or five of went to Film City at Goregaon. Film's director and producer, Nazir Hussain interviewed us for small roles in the movie, and to my surprise, I was selected!

‘Zamaane Ko Dikhana Hai’ is a 1981 Hindi romantic film directed by Nasir Hussain. Rishi Kapoor and Padmini Kolhapure were in lead roles.

One of the standout moments of the movie is the ever-melodious song ‘Dil Lena Khel Hai Dildar Ka’. It was composed by the R.D. Burman,  penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri, and sung by Asha Bhosle and Mohammed Rafi.

Film City is a beautiful place surrounded by forest, trees and greeneries. Very often we used to visit  it for pleasure trips and viewing the film shoot.

Film city is a venture of Government of Maharashtra. It has been renamed as Dadasaheb Phalke Nagari. It is spread over 500 acres. Temples, jails, village, artificial lakes and falls have been constructed there for shooting purposes. It is surrounded by Arey Colony and Sanjay Gandhi National Park.

One of our friends was a paying guest of Bha La Patil, a great Marathi writer, near the SPCE hostel. He used to tell us about the struggles of Rajendra Prasad, and other captivating stories from the film industry.

At Film City, the assistant director briefed us the role we had to perform. Then he showed us the place in audience to sit. We all sat in audience for the film song to be shoot in the movie. We had been directed to come in a particular dress code, grey pant and light colour shirt. Then we had rehearsal of our role in the song. On that day actual shooting did not happen.

Next day, the shooting of the song started; Rishi Kapoor singing the song on stage, Padmini Kolhapure sitting in audience around the table and we all behind her on chairs, enthusiastically shouting "I love Kanchan!" as part of the audience scene while the song, ‘Dil Lena Khel Hai Dildar Ka’, was sung.

We were again called next day for reshoot of the song, if required. We were informed, after long waiting,  that it was not required. There was no shoot on that day. And my role was over.

As the examinations was approaching, I didn’t go for another side role there.

When I watched the movie later, eager to spot myself, I couldn't find myself in the crowd-a true case of cinematic hide-and-seek! Nevertheless, being part of the experience is a memory l'll always treasure.

I was there for three days for shooting. During this period I got chance to explore other sets in Film City. The most fascinating one was the set of movie ’Kranti’, where legendary actors like Dilip Kumar, Hema Malini, and Manoj Kumar were shooting. It was a surreal experience to see these superstars up close and observe their craft.

Beyond the glamour, I gained invaluable insights into the filmmaking process. I learned how sets were constructed, how the crew worked tirelessly to bring a scene to life, and the immense collaboration involved in creating a movie.

At Film City, I learned about Jitendra and Nanda from co-actors who had worked with them. Jitendra lived in a Girgaon Chawl in Mumbai during his struggling years. He has not forgotten his old friends and helps them. He is very family-loving person who respected his heroines greatly. Nanda, the daughter of Master Vinayak, was a highly respected actress in the industry. She was a cooperative and kind-hearted woman who helped and supported her colleagues in the industry.

Another delightful aspect was meeting and talking to side-role actors like C.S. Dubey and Mac Mohan, who would often visit Bachubhai's Mess, where we dined. Sharing stories and experiences with them added a unique flavor to my time at Film City.

Though my stint in acting was short-lived, the memories and lessons from Film City remain etched in my heart. It was more than just a film shoot. It was an adventure that opened my eyes to the magic of cinema !

A Journey Inspired by a Mentor

Heart Beats of SPCE: Part 6

A Journey Inspired by a Mentor !

Prof. S N Nagraju was our Soil Mechanics teacher in SPCE. With smile on his face, he was always friendly with the students.

Whenever we visited his cabin or laboratory we saw him busy with drawings spread on the table, and doing calculations on his calculator.

Later on we came to know that he provided consultancy to the project, construction and expansion of Bombay Airport’s Airstrip. He was expert in Geotechnical Engineering, especially in designing and constructing stone columns. This technique was used under coastal soils conditions to enhance load bearing capacity and provide stability to airstrip.

He had presented papers on stone column design and construction at prestigious international conferences, including those held in Stockholm, Sweden, and Tokyo, Japan.

He was good teacher and always doing the things at ease. He was the teacher who never took attendance in the classroom, but hardly any student would miss his lecture. He encouraged us to perform experiments in soil mechanics laboratory at our pace.

Prof. Nagaraju often shared his experiences from the projects with us during classroom and laboratory sessions. His approachable personality and willingness to involve students in real-world applications left a profound impression on me.

Prof. Nagraju was very considerate of my circumstances. When I participated in cultural programs and sports activities, he kindly granted me an exemption from attendance requirements in laboratory work for that.

Inspired by his mentorship, I chose Geotechnical Engineering as my elective subject in the final year.

I immersed myself in books by renowned authors like Terzaghi and Peck on that subject. Karl Terzaghi, often referred to as the "Father of Soil Mechanics," was a pioneering civil engineer and geologist who revolutionized the field of geotechnical engineering. His innovative research and practical applications transformed geotechnical engineering from a field reliant on experience to one grounded in scientific principles.

Terzaghi's works, along with Prof. Nagaraju's guidance, fueled my passion for Geotechnical Engineering.

At that time, under Bombay University, there were three engineering colleges: VJTI, SPCE and College of Engineering at Panaji, Goa.

In my final year, I secured the highest marks in the university in my elective subject, Geotechnical Engineering. Hearing that, Prof. Nagaraju invited me to his cabin, congratulated on my achievement, and encouraged me to pursue post graduate studies at IIT.

At the end of the final semester, I applied for admission to IIT Bombay, cleared its written test, interview and got selected.  At the time, admission to IIT required separate applications for each institute, as the GATE exam for M.Tech admissions had not yet started—it was introduced in 1982.

While I was selected for the M.Tech program in Geotech at IIT-B, I decided not to pursue it. Instead, I joined the Public Works Department as an Assistant Engineer at Omerga subdivision in Osmanabad district.

However, after a year, I realized that my true calling was teaching. An aspiration to become professor in engineering college! Hence, I left the PWD and joined SSBTS College of Engineering and Technology, Jalgaon on its very first day. That was the day, August 8, 1983!

A new chapter in my journey began!

Hon. Margaret Thatcher inaugurates SPJIMR

Heart Beats of SPCE: Part 5

Hon. Margaret Thatcher inaugurates SPJIMR

As the next academic year began, some pressing issues in the hostel demanded immediate attention. At the request of hostel students, I took on the responsibility of Hostel General Secretary to address these challenges.

During this time, I developed cordial relations with Bhavans College students and their representatives. Our discussions often took place in the canteen, under the banyan tree in the campus, after lectures, and sometimes in their hostel late at night.

Established in 1938 by Hon. K.M. Munshi who served as a member of the Constituent Assembly and thereafter Minister for Agriculture and Food, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, has a rich legacy. Bhavan’s is located in Andheri West, Mumbai on a sprawling 45-acre campus  in the heart of the city. Initially, Andheri campus housed Sardar Patel College of Engineering and Bhavans Arts and Commerce College on it. In 1981, the prestigious S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR) was inaugurated, marking a significant milestone in the Bhavan’s history. At that time, Hon. Dharamsy Khatao served as the president, and Advocate Nani Palkhivala held the position of executive chairman of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.

Hon. Khatao was a prominent figure in India’s industrial history, and was part of the Khatao Group, oldest Indian Business conglomerate.

Ad. Nani Palkhivala was a towering personality, renowned internationally for his contributions to law and economics. His association with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan added immense prestige to the institution, as he was not only a legal luminary but also a passionate advocate for education and cultural values. He played a pivotal role in landmark cases such as the Kesavananda Bharati case, which established the Basic Structure Doctrine of the Indian Constitution.

The leadership of Hon. Khatao, Ad.  Nani Palakhivala, along with others played pivotal role in shaping the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s initiatives and fostering its growth.

The inauguration of the S.P. Jain Institute was graced by the presence of Hon. Margaret Thatcher, then Prime Minister of Great Britain. Known as the "Iron Lady," she was celebrated for her transformative leadership and unwavering determination.

The trustees and administrators of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, esteemed academicians and business leaders from Mumbai and beyond graced the occasion.

The dignitaries, in their speeches, reflected a vision of academic excellence and global leadership. They also shared insights into the importance of education in fostering innovation and collaboration.

The cultural performances added a touch of Indian heritage to the prestigious gathering.

Witnessing such prominent dignitaries up close was a proud moment for all of us, and as a student representative, I had the privilege of volunteering at this historic event.

This experience brought me into contact with Members of Bhavan’s Management Committee, whose guidance and support proved invaluable during my tenure as Hostel General Secretary.

Reflecting on these moments, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunities to learn, contribute, and grow alongside such inspiring individuals and institutions.

Vibrant SPCE

Heart Beats of SPCE: Part 4

Vibrant SPCE!

The Marathi Vangmay Mandal began its journey with great enthusiasm after its formation.

In its first meeting, Sanjay Deo, Pramod Sawant, and Mangesh Borase proposed that the inaugural program should be a grand one. After thorough discussion, we decided to host a Katha Kathan session by the celebrated Marathi writer, Va Pu Kale, an idea enthusiastically endorsed by Prof. R. M. Joshi. To invite Mr. Kale personally, Nitin Gadkari and I visited Sahitya Sahavas, a cooperative housing society in Kalanagar, Bandra West.

Sahitya Sahavas was home to prominent Marathi literary figures, including Shanta Shelake, Vinda Karandikar, Madhukar Toradmal, Vijaya Rajadhyaksha. Ramesh Tendulkar, the father of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar was staying with his family in Ushakal Building there.

Va Pu Kale's straightforwardness and practicality shone through during our interaction. He shared humorous anecdotes from his experiences with event organizers. His background with the Bombay Municipal Corporation provided him with a unique perspective, blending humor and practicality seamlessly.

The day of the event at the Gymkhana auditorium was unforgettable. The venue was packed, and Va Pu Kale, dressed smartly in his grey safari, exuded confidence. He greeted the students warmly and began with the humorous and thought-provoking story "Pant Vaidya," which revolved around a seemingly foolish character who cleverly used this perception to his advantage. The tale was met with immense applause. After a brief pause,Mr. Kale presented "Partner," a deeply touching narrative that resonated strongly with the audience. Both stories showcased his storytelling brilliance, ensuring the program's phenomenal success.

Building on this momentum, the Mandal organized a variety of events, such as poetry readings, mono acting, and debate competitions for students. Topics like:

"Are love marriages more successful than arranged marriages?"

“Hit ani hot natakachi samasya: aahe kinva nahi?" sparked lively discussions and enthusiastic participation.

Responding to a request from students, we arranged a poetry reading session with Ms. Shanta Shelake, the illustrious Marathi poetess known for her contributions in Marathi literature; and her herat touching Marathi Film Songs. Her simplicity and profound artistry captivated the audience. During the program, she read her poems, guided students on the essence of poetry, and shared her inspiring journey as a poetess, leaving a lasting impression on all present.

…And we were invited to participate in youth festival program arranged by Bombay University at Ruparel College at Mahim.

Established in 1952, Ruparel College has a legacy of over 70 years in shaping young minds and fostering academic excellence. It has remained a hub for cultural activities, nurturing talent across generations. Aishwarya Rai and Urmila Matondakar are its past students!

It was an honour for us to participate in such prestigious event!

We formed a team to participate in different cultural events, worked very hard. The famous poet Ratnakar Parmekar and Prof. S F Pendase guided and supported us. We finally reached to Ruparel College.

Our team performed well in the event. Performance of our team was well acclaimed by the audience.

During the festival, I presented two of my poems:

‘Mala Baghun Gali, tu Vruthach ka Hasali?’ (मला बघून गाली, तू वृथाच का हसली?) and ‘Smashan’ (स्मशान!), both of which had been published in Saptahik Lokprabha.

Sharing my literary work on such a platform was both an honor and an unforgettable experience.

Additionally, I performed a solo acting piece-delivering the monologue of ‘Lalya’ (लाल्या) from ‘Ashrunchi Zali Fule’ (अश्रूंची झाली फुले !), a masterpice by the great Marathi writer Vasant Kanetkar. The powerful and emotional portrayal of Lalya's character resonated deeply with the audience.

We returned like heroes to our campus!

Marathi Vangmay Mandal

Marathi Vangmay Mandal

Heart Beats of SPCE: Part 3

Establishment of Marathi Vangmay Mandal...

The second semester started in January. Having thoroughly studied subjects like Survey and Strength of Material during my diploma, I found them easily manageable in this semester.  I was quite relaxed and began taking an interest in other activities, something I've had a flair for; like watching marathi drama, attending Kavi Sammelan, writing poems etc. Some of my poems were published in weekly ‘Lokprabha’.

Staying at the SPCE hostel, I developed good relationships with the locals, even owners of nearby hotels like Neelkamal and Bobino. I also built cordial relations with the college staff residing on campus, often helping them with various tasks. Room No. 57 was  a hub of fun and lively discussions; students often used to come over there to enjoy it. With consistent follow-up with hostel authorities, we managed to reduce the number of trespassers on the campus significantly.

One evening, while having dinner in the mess, someone informed me about a program called "Fuli and Gola," a quiz competition on Mumbai Doordarshan, where a team from our college would represent us. Intrigued, we headed to Prof. Bhavani Prasad's residence in the hostel to watch the program. After viewing it, we returned to Room No. 57, and my immediate question to my friends was: "Who sent these students to TV program to represent our college?" The backdrop to my inquiry was their poor performance-they struggled with speaking Marathi and understanding the questions. Even with seniors present, no one had an answer.

The next morning, at around 9 a.m., before classes began, we gathered in the college garden to discuss the previous day's TV program. As we deliberated, more and more students joined us. Through discussions, we learned that Doordarshan had sent an invitation to the college, which was passed to student representatives. Instead of circulating the opportunity among students by displaying it on the notice board, they kept it to themselves. Ultimately, two of them decided to go directly to the television station. I pointed out that the representatives had failed in their duties and their performance was embarrassing.

After exchanging views, we decided to call the representatives to the garden and take their assurance that such actions wouldn't be repeated. However, to our surprise, they refused to join us, and on top of that, they spoke adamantly to the students who conveyed the message.

Determined, I moved to the college gate, stood in the porch, and declared,  “We would sit on a dharna until the representatives come to apologise”.  During this protest, we also discussed other issues, such as gymkhana activities, participation in youth festival, arranging inter-collegiate competitions, and prepared a list of demands. By lunchtime, most of the students had gathered at the gate.

At around 2 p.m., Prof. Natu and Prof. Rawale approached us. They were very friendly and understanding, as we had interacted with them often during college treks. They took note of our demands and went inside to discuss the matter with the student representatives.

After half an hour, the representatives came to the gate, accompanied by Vice Principal Papa Vaidya and Prof. Ms. Gogate Madam. With folded hands, they apologized for their actions. I stepped forward, shook hands with them, and thanked the professors for their efforts in resolving the deadlock. I also urged the students to return to their classes peacefully.

Before dispersing, I appealed all the students to gather in the Gymkhana Hall, after college hours, to constitute Marathi Vangmay Mandal in our college. Nitin Gadakari (not the minister) and I had already discussed this idea earlier, so we were prepared.

Later that evening, all interested students gathered in the Gymkhana Hall. During the meeting, I was elected as the President of the Marathi Vangmay Mandal, while Nitin was chosen as the Secretary. It was an exciting moment, beginning of a new chapter for promoting Marathi culture and literature within our college!

Room No. 57 !

Heart Beats of SPCE: Part 2

Room No. 57 !

l canceled my admission at VJTI and joined the second year of the Civil Engineering branch at SPCE, Andheri. It was October 3, 1979!

After completing all the admission procedures, paying the college fees, submitting the original certificates, etc., I headed to the hostel. I was assigned Room Number 57!

In hostel, Seniors Sabnis, Hasabnis, Vajpayee, staying in the room opposite ours, warmly inquired about us and assured their cooperation. They gave valuable advice, saying, "The exams are in December, and since there isn't much time, start preparing your submissions immediately. Focus on studying Math Ill thoroughly; there's no need to worry much about other subjects." Later that night, I joined them for dinner at Bachchu Bhai’s Mess. After dinner, we watched the program Chhaya Geet at Prof. Bhavani Prasad’s residence who was rector and living in the upper wing.

The next morning, Chandrakant Nehte and Ashok Dahad, both from Jalgaon, studying at J J School of Arts, but staying in the SPCE hostel, showed genuine care and concern for me. We had breakfast at the nearby Swadesh Udupi Hotel.

After that, I headed to college. Regular classes had started two months ago, and the syllabus had progressed significantly. Admission to Direct Second Year after completing a diploma meant I had joined quite late. I reached the class at 9:30 a.m., where Math Ill was being taught. Without the foundation of Math I and Il, understanding Math Ill was quite challenging. Prof. Mrs. Kanekar entered the class and swiftly solved 4-5 problems on Fourier Series. I tried to grasp and remember every word she said. In subsequent lectures she taught an important topic called the Jacobi Series. Prof. Mrs, Kanekar, calm and gentle in nature, spoke very little. She would head to the staff room immediately after her lectures ended.

Later, Prof. Perera taught Statistics and Matrices in Math, while Prof. Reddy explained topics like Heat and String Equations. Prof. Perera taught in a composed and clear manner. He spoke excellent English, frequently paused during lessons, and gave us time to write down the problems he solved on the board. Prof. Reddy would write meticulously across the full length of the board, leaving little need to erase it. Both professors were highly experienced and imparted their subjects in a simple yet impactful manner.

During the Math classes, I would try to understand the topics being taught while also thinking about how to use techniques to solve problems. At the same time, I would carefully observe the teaching methods of all the professors. At night, discussions on these topics would happen at the hostel.

By the end of November, the first semester was over. The exams were completed in December. After 8-10 days of holidays, the second semester began. In due course, the results were announced. I had scored good marks, which made me feel very relaxed.

During the holidays, outings to nearby places, trekking, watching plays and movies, visiting Goregaon Film City to watch shootings, strolling at Juhu Beach in the evening, and late-night chatting sessions at Hotel Neelkamal, mess, or our hostel room became regular activities!

At the hostel, I shared the room with Suresh Mahajan and Rajan Bunge. Suresh and I were from the same hometown, Changdev, and were good friends. Suresh, being a mechanical engineer, had worked in Mumbai for a year and was well-acquainted with the city. His knowledge often proved helpful to us.

Rajan was from Malinagar in Solapur district. He had a sharp nose, jet-black thick hair, fair complexion, and a well-built physique, with a rugged personality! Every morning in our room, he would complete a routine of around one hundred Surya Namaskars and an equal number of sit-ups. After that, he'd spend half an hour on worship and reciting hymns. He had a large Rampuri knife, which opened with a button, kept in his suitcase. He would demonstrate how to handle the knife. He often narrated mysterious stories in an engaging way. Many times at night, he would conduct planchette sessions to invite spirits of great personalities and seek answers to questions-a skill he had mastered!

On the door of our room, instead of writing our names, I had written, "The Men With Guts Live Here!". One day, I pasted photos of models from a Kingfisher Airlines calendar on the walls of our room and wrote appropriate lines from Hindi movies and my poems beneath them. For instance, "Tumse Accha Kaun Hai?" "Tumsa Nahin Dekha," and "Mala Baghun Gali Ka Vruthach Tu Hasate?" On the walls near the ceiling, we wrote different instructions for visitors, such as "Yanha Bhari Banduk Lekar Baithna Mana Hai" (Carrying loaded guns here is prohibited). Visiting friends would interpret these in their own way!

Over time, Room Number 57, a place where something or the other kept happening continuously, became the center for various activities conducted in the hostel and college!

Math I and II

आमच्या रुमच्या दरवाज्यावर आमची नावे लिहण्या ऐवजी ‘The Men With Guts Live Here!’

Admission to SPCE

Heart Beats of SPCE: Part 1

Admission to SPCE

I completed my Diploma in Civil Engineering at Government Polytechnic, Jalgaon in 1979. After that, I applied for second-year engineering admission at various engineering colleges in Maharashtra. There were only eight colleges in the whole state at that time. They included the Government College of Engineering in Pune, along with colleges in Aurangabad, Amravati, and Karad. VJTI, SPCE, and Walchand College of Engineering were aided institutions, and Sir Vishveshwarayya College of Engineering in Nagpur was a regional one. Having obtained good marks in final year diploma, I was getting admission offers from nearly all the colleges I applied to!

When I was in the 10th standard, I couldn’t go on the school trip to Mumbai at that time. From that moment, I had a deep desire to see and live in the city!  I've always enjoyed reading and spent my childhood diving into novels and autobiographies of great personalities. During school, I read "Simhasan" and "Mumbai Dinnak" by Arun Sadhu, and I absolutely loved them! I had watched the movie "Simhasan" multiple times because it captivated me so much. All these experiences really fueled my desire to see and eventually live in Mumbai. So, naturally, when it came time to choose a college, Mumbai was at the top of my list!

In the first round, I was lucky to get admission in VJTI, but I couldn’t get hostel because there were very few seats available. So, I stayed temporarily with my buddy Pramod Jaykar in ‘D Hostel’ of VJTI until I could sort out other living arrangements. I started attending the classes. I liked the college very much. It was located in the vicinity of five garden area and there were many students from Jalgaon District. Over the period of time, I found the chances of getting hostel dim as very few were likely to cancel their admissions in the prestigious institute like VJTI.

So, I decided to check out SPCE College. What a coincidence—I ran into my friend Suresh Mahajan, who was there to ask about admissions too! We decided to grab some tea and snacks at the canteen, and let me tell you, I was blown away by the vibe there. Everyone was having a great time, sharing jokes, and chatting about all the fun and cultural events lined up for the coming days. The energy was infectious, and it made me feel so happy to be around such enthusiastic students!

After our snack, we took a stroll around the campus. As we stepped out of the canteen, I spotted this magnificent banyan tree with a cozy seating area around it, where students were gathered and enjoying each other's company. We wandered further and came across a beautiful Shiva Temple on campus, built with white elegant marble and featuring lovely rising steps and platforms on both of their sides for sitting. It was such an engrossing sight!

I loved the experience walking along side Bhavan's Arts, Commerce and Science College; and its hostels. When we arrived at the SPCE hostel, I was really struck by the lively atmosphere there. I had a nice chat with some of the students.

While I was there, I noticed a group of students hanging out near the gate, and after a little while, they broke up. Curious, I asked what was going on and found out that Danny Denzongpa had come by to visit a close relative. Growing up, l've always been fascinated by actors and actresses, writers, and great speakers, so hearing that was exciting!

The students let me in on some fun facts: Many Hindi films have actually been shot on this campus! Plus, I learned that the famous Juhu Beach was just a short walk away from the college, and Amitabh Bachchan was residing in his iconic’Pratiksha Bungalow’ nearby. What an amazing information!

On this backdrop, when I got a telegram from SPCE confirming my admission and learned further that hostel accommodation was also available; I immediately cancelled my admission to VJTI to go with SPCE; looking forward to this new adventure!

Gathering of Beloved Ones!

Gathering of Beloved Ones!

Changadev, a village located at the confluence of the Tapi and Purna rivers in Jalgaon district! I am proud to be Changadevite!

Over the years, many like me migrated to different cities for education, jobs and business and settled there. Their children continued moving further afield. Some went abroad for education, found jobs, and settled down there.

A gathering of Changadevites, residing in Pune for work and business was organized at the Shri. Sant Adishakti Muktabai Temple in Bhosari.

Today, more than 300 people attended this meeting, which is a very joyous and honorable occasion for all of us.

For the past two years, Vidyadhar Mahajan and his fellow friends have been striving for this. Vidyadhar created a WhatsApp group named "Changadev Get Together." He located individuals one by one, obtained their contact numbers, spoke with them, and met them personally when possible. He sought guidance from seniors and coordinated with people from Changadev to work together. This arduous and persistent work of his and his colleagues has culminated in the form of this gathering.

The enthusiastic participation of the youth at the meeting and the presence of many senior and esteemed personalities brought a great joy.

It was particularly delightful to meet Dr. V. R. Chaudhary, an exceptional personality and world-renowned scientist, who shared his experiences and provided invaluable guidance, which was an inspiring moment for all of us.

Although Vidyadhar introduced him formally, I consider it my duty to write about his work again.

After starting his career as a scientist at the prestigious National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) in Pune, he rose to the position of Director Scientist. He was honored with the 'Vasvik Award' in 1993 for his fundamental research, which has been critical in the fields of science and technology.

Stanford University, established in 1885 in California, covering 8,000 acres with various academic programs and home to many Nobel laureates, used stringent criteria to publish a ranking of the world's 2% most influential scientists; and Dr. V. R. Chaudhary's name was placed prominently on that list, surprising many!

He served at prestigious universities, including Fayetteville in the USA and Hokkaido in Japan, as a Visiting Research Professor for some time.

Despite staying away from the limelight, even at the age of 84, he remains dedicated to his work. He diligently mentors students aspiring to advance their research in their fields. I pray for his long, healthy life and wish him success in his endeavors!

While attending this gathering organized at the Shri Sant Adishakti Muktabai Temple on Alandi Road, I recollect the occasion when Shri Changadev Maharaj, mounted on a tiger, with his disciples, set out for Alandi to meet the siblings Nivrutti, Gyanadev, Sopan, and Muktabai. These siblings had come forward to welcome him, sitting on the wall. This brings back memories of how Yogi Changadev, there after, accepted discipleship from Adishakti Muktabai.

It is evident that this gathering, organized to ensure acquaintance among one another and assist each other in times of need, has achieved far more objectives than that. I sincerely congratulate Vidyadhar, Sudhir Lokhande, Deepak Chaudhary, Deepak Ladhe, Vishwas Patil, and all their colleagues!

I express my heartfelt thanks to everyone for warmly welcoming us!

Dr. Mahendra Ingale, Former Principal

P.S. Vidyadhar is a student of 1985-86 batch of Girnanjani Polytechnic, Erondol. I was the Principal there.

Changadev Get-together

SWOT Of Mine!

 S W O T Of Mine!

Hear with heart and speak with eyes

Strengths like these light up the skies!

Weaknesses are the part of the tune

Speaking too much, under the moon!

This is good and that is too; not true

Let your words be bold, break through!

Opportunities hide from seeking sight

Whatever comes, I face with might!

Greatest threat is yet to be seen

God with me I am bound to win!

Pre Blog - SPCE

My Dear SPCEites,

While writing a blog ‘Heartbeats of SPCE’, in English and ‘एस पी सी ई ची स्पंदने’ in Marathi, I visited Wikipedia site to know what information they have put on the site. The information about SPACE, under the head, Sardar Patel College of Engineering is available on Wikipedia. A little bit correction is needed in this information on Wikipedia.

Actually, we named our cultural event as SPACE  in the year 1982. It was our creativity to put ‘A’ in the middle of short form of our college name SPCE making it ‘SPACE’. And as the event happened in 1982 it was named as ‘SPACE 82’. So the correction 1982 in place of 1983 is required on Wikipedia.

I tried to do this correction on Wikipedia but I couldn’t, hence requesting you to go on Wikipedia and edit this information.

My Dear Friends,

I am writing about the beautiful moments we spent in SPCE! SPCE are not merely words they are part of our life!

Our friends , Sh. Yagnesh Jani and Sh. Pankaj Mehta have been using the name of SPACE in all their companies.

It started with, Space Engineers, followed by

Space Constructions, then Space Contractors Pvt. Ltd.

and currently Space Contractors LLP.

Our other friend Sh. Pankaj Shah heads the Group of  companies nicknamed as S.P.GROUP OF COMPANIES which includes,

(1) S.P. CONSULTING

(2)S.P. CIVIL ENGINEERS PVT.LTD.

(3)S.P.ASSOCIATES

Dear friends,

Expressing gratitude towards our alma mater brings me immense joy that words cannot fully capture! SPCE is the place that nurtured our growth and provided us with abundant, unforgettable memories.

My Dear Ones,

I will write about those beautiful moments we shared together- moments of joy and laughter, moments of pride and achievements, and moments when we faced challenges head-on.

I will write about the stunning campus, classrooms, auditorium, playground, canteen, temple, and garden.

I will write about Bhavan's College of Arts, Commerce and Science, the boys' and girls' hostels, the students' elections, and encounters with gangsters.

I will write about Marathi Vangamay Mandal, University youth festival, and the poetry, drama, debate, and elocution competitions.

Dear Hostel Buddies,

I will write about the hostel and mess, and the time spent with celebrities coming there.

I will write about the hotels, restaurants, and Juhu Beach; the places where we created valuable moments in our lives.

I will write about the Ganapati festival and the Holi celebrations in the hostel, and the uniqueness of our celebrations.

I will express my gratitude for our dedicated rectors and wardens, the lovely staff, our caring watchmen, and the hostel clerks.

Dear Friends,

I will write about our devoted teachers, including Prof. S. N. Nagraju, Prof. R.M. Joshi, and Prof. Bahavani Prasad, among others.

I will also mention our class fellows such as Hemanat Naik Navare, Goldie Goradia, Kanhaiya Shah, Pramod Morankar, and their achievements. Additionally, I will highlight Ranjit Naiknavre and Dr. S.P. Yawalkar, who have excelled in their respective fields. Furthermore, I will talk about notable alumni, including Rahul Churi and Samir Nigam, the founders of PhonePe; Mohit Lad from ThousandEyes; actress Shefali Jariwala; American cricketer Saurabh Netravalkar; and many others.

Dear Sweethearts,

I have a plan to refresh your memories by writing about the walk, we started from hotel Delhi Darbar at Grant Road, after midnight, after our gathering success celebration party was over on that day of March 1982; a long walk full of dancing, joking and making fun on nearly empty streets which ended at 6:30 morning at hotel Swadesh at Andheri!

I also have a plan to recount the breath-holding incident that occurred in the hostel at midnight on April 30, 1980, which is still remembered by all hostelites. Thank God it was April Fool's Day!

Warm regards to all!

Earnest Appeal

Earnest Appeal !

The backdrop of Polytechnic teachers being overlooked for AICTE scales following the sixth pay announcement has been a matter of deep concern. To address this pressing issue, an urgent meeting of all Polytechnic Associations across the country was called in New Delhi.

The meeting, held at the prestigious Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) in Pusa Campus, New Delhi, was meticulously organized by Prof. Satish Suryan, Prof. Ravindra Singh, and their dedicated colleagues from Delhi Polytechnics. Representatives from across India attended, reflecting the unity among Polytechnic teachers.

The Maharashtra Government Polytechnic Teachers' Association was honored to be represented by Prof. Rajnish Pise (President), Prof. Shrikant Naik (Treasurer), and myself, as the General Secretary. On the agenda, the most pressing issue was the establishment of the National Federation of Polytechnic Teachers' Associations (NFPT)and the election of its office bearers.

Prominent figures like Prof. Santosh Kumar Pipra (Madhya Pradesh), Prof. Chandrashekhar and Prof. Gokhari (Andhra Pradesh), Prof. Bhaskaran (Karnataka), Prof. Abdul Naser (Kerala), Prof. Madanlal Rana (Rajasthan), Prof. Jamir (Assam), and many others brought invaluable insights to the table. Prof. Satish Suryan's welcome and briefing set the tone for the intense discussions that followed.

The first day's deliberations concluded with a formal decision to elect the NFPT’s President the following day. That evening, the camaraderie among attendees blossomed. The impeccable hospitality of our hosts added warmth to the event. We shared stories and experiences; and has a fun.

The morning of the second day brought an unexpected twist. A group of teachers approached me with a heartfelt request: they wanted me to take on the responsibility as President of the federation. Their confidence in me was humbling, but I was genuinely surprised. I expressed my gratitude but insisted that Prof. Satish Suryan, who had worked tirelessly to organize this landmark meeting and was an aspirant for the role, should be given the opportunity. "We will all support him," I assured them.

However, their conviction did not waver. Within half an hour, another group came forward with the same proposal. Feeling the weight of their trust, I decided to consult Prof. Rajnish Pise for guidance. After careful discussion, I agreed to consider the role-but only under the condition that the decision would be unanimous.

With this resolution in mind, I approached Prof. Suryan to share the developments. His reaction was one of visible annoyance. After a moment of contemplation, he firmly stated, "Let there be an election."

On that day, March 3 of 2006, by mid-morning, it was clear that the post of President would be decided through an election. The conference hall buzzed with anticipation, the atmosphere charged with tension. Mrs. Rane, Principal of Government Polytechnic, Panaji (Goa), was appointed as the Election Officer.

Prof. Satish Suryan and I were the candidates for this significant role. Mrs. Rane outlined the election procedure. As part of the process, each candidate was given five minutes to address the gathering and present their vision.

Prof. Suryan spoke first, passionately recounting the relentless efforts he and his team had invested in organizing this landmark meeting. He emphasized the strategic advantage of having a President based in Delhi, enabling closer coordination with the HRD Ministry. His appeal was heartfelt, urging the gathering to entrust him with the responsibility of leading the federation.

When my turn came, I walked towards the dais slowly, and with confidence. Standing firmly, I greeted the dignitaries on and off the dais; with a small smile on my face, I tried to lighten the atmosphere. I began by congratulating and thanking Prof. Suryan and his team for their commendable efforts in organizing this crucial meeting. Their dedication deserved recognition.

I spoke about the essence of an organization and the responsibilities of its leader. I shared my experiences—two decades of serving as General Secretary, navigating struggles within and beyond the system, and fostering unity among members.

After a big pause, I addressed the gathering: "Dear friends, personal sacrifice and strong commitment are the foundation stones of any organization." The room was silent, hanging on to every word. Turning to Prof. Suryan, I continued, "My dear Prof. Suryan, you deserve to be President; no doubt about it. Not for me, but for the benefit of our organization, for these people, I earnestly appeal to you to withdraw…"

The words resonated deeply. The room erupted in applause that filled the hall with energy and emotion. Prof. Suryan, moved by the moment, rose from his seat, approached the dais, and graciously announced his withdrawal. He congratulated me, and the applause grew even louder!

In that moment, I felt the profound impact of an earnest appeal !

Remembering The Poet

A Tribute to Prof. Avinash Zope

*A tribute to Prof. A. S. Zope on the occasion of his retirement*

My colleague Prof. Avinash Zope Sir, Lecturer and in-charge Head of Department, Electrical Engineering, Government Polytechnic, Jalgaon, is retiring from government Service on 31/8/2022. Best wishes to him for his second innings after retirement. I pray to the Lord that he may live a fulfilling life according to his heart’s desires and expectations.

Mr. Zope sir obtained his diploma from Government Polytechnic, Jalgaon in the year 1981 and graduated from VJTI Mumbai. After seven or eight years of industrial experience, he joined the Technical Education Department as Lecturer of Electrical Engineering. He served in various Government Polytechnics at  Khamgaon, Gadchiroli, Dhule, Ausari and also at Government College of Engineering, Jalgaon. While in service he received M. Tech. Ed.. degree from NITTR, Bhopal.

He is known as a very disciplined teacher who strived round the clock for the all-round development of his students. He wrote books on Electrical Engineering subjects in simple language for students. For many years he was working on the Board of Studies of Electrical Engineering discipline of Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education.

Many old and heavy machines of the electrical engineering department under his leadership are still functioning well. He had updated the laboratories and classrooms in the electrical department at a minimal cost. He had guided the students in their projects to illuminate layouts and models of various thermal plants of Maharashtra and exhibited them with in the polytechnic. Photos of various scientists and information about their work were displayed on display boards in laboratories and classrooms.

Mr. Zope sir along with his department, was responsible for maintaining the power supply systems of various buildings and hostels in the forty acre area of the institution. With very little financial provision for maintenance, he used to facilitate many difficult tasks due to his personal liaison with the officers of the electricity board.

In September 2018, a transformer in the institute premises exploded. Oil spilled out of it and spread with fire and created a very precarious situation. Mr. Zope sir and his colleagues immediately contacted the electricity board engineers and safely pulled out the blasted transformer. In two days the electricity supply was restored with the installation of a new transformer. I remember many such incidents on this occasion.

He always insisted that any event in the organization was carried out in a very orderly manner. He always encouraged the students and entrusted them with the responsibility of organizing the program. Especially during Dussehra, Teacher's Day, Engineer's Day, Felicitation Ceremonies, Farewell Functions. Electrical engg. students used volunteer to draw Rangolis. The electrical engg. department used to be lit up with lighting.

He played an important role in establishing and registering the Alumni Association of the Government Polytechnic, Jalgaon. Through the association, he implemented various activities in the institution.

When the Entrepreneurship Management Development Cell was functioning in the institute, a three-day training program was organized for the students through it. In that, on the final day, the students would have a direct interaction with the renowned industrialists and the students would get an opportunity to ask the entrepreneurs their questions and clarify their doubts. This program was coordinated by Shri. Zope Sir. This program was not only very beneficial to the students but also the renowned entrepreneurs who came to the institute were overwhelmed by the organization of the program and the creativity of the students. Even today many people remember this event.

In his speeches Mr. Zope sir used to mention the poem, “You start dying slowly if you don't.......” written by Nobel Prize winner Pablo Neruda. In this poem, the poet says that while trying to fulfill our dreams with innovation, we should enjoy a beautiful life, otherwise we die slowly.

Mr. Zope sir is not only an ideal teacher but also a good human being. He is a family man, liked to stay active, went on sightseeing trips with family and relatives and attended classical music and dance events. He has an aptitude to enjoy life to his heart's content.

His association with Government Polytechnic, Jalgaon spans 45 years. He and both of his daughters are alumni of the institution. Interestingly, all three had passed out of the institute standing first in their classes. Many of his students are working in various responsible positions. Some have become successful entrepreneurs. I am personally indebted to him for his cooperation with me in many activities. I am sure Mr. Zope Sir will be a contented man as he retires. Wishing him my best wishes once again, I take leave.

Thank you!

Prof. A S Zope Retirement

Alumni  Association

You start dying slowly if  you don't.......
