A few days ago, I wrote a blog titled “Every Great Person Must Write an Autobiography.” That idea later became a chapter in my book Engineering Heartbeats. Today, I see this thought unfolding in reality: many distinguished personalities—especially those who have held positions of power—are writing their autobiographies. Some have already published theirs, while others are preparing to do so.

From ancient times to the digital age, human beings have been fascinated by the lives of extraordinary individuals. The autobiography has always served as a window into greatness—revealing struggles, triumphs, and the inner workings of remarkable minds. Yet in recent years, the number of autobiographies has grown dramatically. What was once a solitary act of reflection has now become a sophisticated enterprise, blending literature, psychology, technology, and commerce.

Autobiography as Inspiration:

When eminent figures from diverse fields—sports, actors, writers, and entrepreneurs—write their life stories, they highlight their personal journeys: the barriers they overcame, the struggles they endured, and the triumphs they achieved. These narratives inspire not only the general public but also those aspiring within their respective domains. They remind us that greatness is not born overnight but forged through resilience.

Autobiography as History:

When individuals who have wielded political power or held positions of authority write their autobiographies, the narrative expands beyond personal achievement. Their stories capture the social, political, and cultural environment of their times. In doing so, they become part of history itself—offering insights into the forces that shaped nations and influenced the world. Such works are not merely personal reflections; they are historical documents that reveal the interplay between individual decisions and collective destinies.

Autobiography as Enterprise:

Autobiographies have always existed, but today their numbers are increasing at an unprecedented pace. This surge is driven by new possibilities: the availability of ghost writers, advanced printing technology, structural editing, and the use of AI tools for gathering references, grammatical checking, and proofreading.

Writing an autobiography has now become a project in itself, involving multiple teams and disciplines:

• Data gathering and research

• Analysis of events and interpretation

• Social media management to build anticipation

• Global publishing in multiple languages

• Formats like audio books, reels, and podcasts to reach diverse audiences

• Strategic marketing campaigns across digital and print platforms

• Prestigious book launches and relaunches at reputed venues

• Reviews in both traditional and digital media

This multifaceted enterprise transforms autobiography writing into a global phenomenon, blending creativity with commerce and ensuring that life stories reach audiences in every format imaginable.

Autobiography as Psychological Need:

For the great person, however, writing an autobiography is not merely a literary exercise—it is often a psychological necessity. It fulfills an inner urge to reflect, to share, and to leave behind a legacy. As the eminent psychologist Carl Rogers observed, self-expression is central to human growth. For those who have lived lives of consequence, autobiography becomes both a personal catharsis and a gift to posterity.

Conclusion:

Autobiographies today are more than stories of individuals. They are bridges between memory and history, between the inner world of struggle and the outer world of transformation. They remind us that greatness is not only lived—it must also be written, so that it may endure.

In the end, the autobiography is both mirror and monument: A Mirror reflecting the intimate truths of a life, and A Monument preserving those truths for generations to come.
